Gov. Ricketts Names Roads Director
Today, Governor Pete Ricketts announced Kyle Schneweis, P.E. as the new Director of the Nebraska Department of Roads. His appointment comes at the conclusion of a national search, which commenced in February, for a forward-thinking leader for the department.
Schneweis is an accomplished transportation policy expert who currently works as a partner at High Street Consulting Group, LLC, an industry-leading transportation planning, policy, and financial consulting firm. The firm’s clients include more than a dozen state transportation departments, the Federal Highway Administration, the Federal Transit Administration, and the Association of American State Highway and Transportation Officials.
From 1999 to 2010, Schneweis served in a variety of roles at the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) including Travel Forecast Engineer, Metropolitan Planning Organization Administration Engineer, System Enhancement Program Manager, Long Range Planning Manager, and Chief of Government Affairs. During his time as Chief of Government Affairs, he served as chief advisor and support staff to the KDOT Secretary during the planning and implementation of a series of organizational and cultural changes. These initiatives include:
- Improvement of resource allocation and project selection processes.
- Establishment of targets for the transportation system and agency staff.
- Creation of a practical design approach that right-sized projects to save resources and improve efficiencies.
- Development and eventual legislative approval for multi-year transportation investment in the $8.2 billion T-WORKS program.

“Kyle brings experience from his time at the Kansas DOT and his work as a strategic consultant that will focus our department on forward-thinking initiatives,” said Governor Ricketts. “His leadership will help our department think creatively about how our state finances roads, works with regulators, constructs roads, and plans for the future.”
Schneweis holds a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of North Dakota.
The new director starts June 8, 2015 at a salary of $145,000.
